Yorkshire Geography
A combination of contrasting conditions and natural resources has made Yorkshire a very interesting place geographically. The famous ‘Pennines’ in the West is of Carboniferous origin – meaning ‘coal-bearing’ in Latin. The Central vale traces its origins back to the Perma-Triassic period over 200 million years ago. In the North East the North York Moors are slightly younger being Jurassic in age while the Yorkshire Wolds to the South East are thought to be Cretaceous chalk uplands.
Yorkshire’s rivers in the Western and Central regions feed into the River Ouse, which reaches out to the North Sea via the Humber Estuary.
